Colon Hydrotherapy

Death begins in the colon.

Most health problems are started or aggravated by toxins originating in the colon. An unclean, weak, and poorly functioning colon is a breeding ground for disease, sickness, and death. According to the American Cancer Society, colon cancer is the #1 cancer for men and women in America, causing many of them to die. At least two million people suffer from colitis, diverticulitis, and other inflammatory bowel disorders. Much of the population of our country is chronically constipated with impacted colons. The latest statistics reveal that in the U.S. alone, over $100 million is spent annually on laxatives and more than 100,000 colostomies are performed every year.

Colon hydrotherapy, Liver Cleanses, Gherson Therapy, Home enemas are safe, effective methods of removing waste from the large intestine and liver without the use of drugs or laxatives. Colon hydrotherapy, also called colonics, or colon irrigation, is a treatment whereby a soothing flow of warm water is gently instilled into the colon through a nozzle inserted into the rectum to cleanse the contents of the lower colon. By introducing filtered and temperature-regulated water into the colon, waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural means.

How Does Colon Hydrotherapy Work?

The typical American diet, consisting of high-fat, low-fiber, refined junk foods, is the primary reason the colon becomes so unhealthy. Consequently, many people's colons are impacted, dehydrated, spasmodic and gaseous. The large and small intestines may have extra length, coiling or redundancy, adhesions and locked or lethargic muscles.

Colon hydrotherapy works in several ways: cleansing, exercising, and reshaping the colon, as well as stimulating reflex points. It clears the colon of old, hardened, waste material and harmful toxins so they can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Once this material is removed, your colon can again begin its normal elimination function, resulting in a reduced load on the liver. During the cleansing process the "good intestinal bacteria" population, essential for optimal health and a good digestive system, may become diminished. However, TSWC offers a bifidobacteria formula that lowers the pH of the intestine and creates a favorable environment for the growth of "good bacteria," which can be introduced into the colon to repopulate the colon with friendly bacteria. Good intestinal flora means added defense against disease-producing organisms.

It can stimulate the immune systems, provide a favorable environment for digestion, and allow for better absorption of nutrients. It helps eliminate distortions of the colon and narrow, spastic constrictions so that the colon gradually begins to resume its natural shape. In addition, every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. A colon hydrotherapy session stimulates these reflex points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way, similar to reflexology.

Is Colon Hydrotherapy Effective?

Colon hydrotherapy has a long history of improving the digestive system and preventing colon cancer in many patients. Waste material allowed to remain in the colon may result in toxic buildup, which can be reabsorbed into the body. The toxins are responsible for many bodily imbalances, which can contribute to disease elsewhere in the body and may increase the potential for exposure to cancer-causing agents. With colon hydrotherapy, your colon will be cleaner and your overall health status will be improved.

What is the relationship between colon hydrotherapy and traditional health care?

While not a cure for any disease or ailment, colon hydrotherapy may be considered an important adjunctive therapy to help you rejuvenate and maintain your overall health. If you have a concern about your health or the appropriateness of colon hydrotherapy, you should consult with your primary care physician or gastroenterologist.

Will my health insurance cover Colon Hydrotherapy?

To date, TSWC is not aware of any insurance companies that cover colon hydrotherapy for prophylactic purposes. However, colon hydrotherapy  or colon irrigation may be indicated as a preparation for a colonoscopy.  Ask your primary care physician for a referral if used for this purpose.  Colon hydrotherapy may also be indicated for the geriatric, paraplegic, quadriplegic and Parkinson's disease patient as they are especially affected by problems with elimination as a result of poor nutrition, dehydration and/or lack of exercise.

What is the typical protocol for scheduling an appointment?

Typically, a consultation is scheduled with a certified practitioner of colon hydrotherapy.  Most practitioners recommend a series of treatments in order to gain the most benefits (minimum 3 sessions and up to 6 sessions over a period of six weeks). After completing the series, single sessions can be scheduled. During the consultation, questions are asked regarding the clients past medical history and any pre-existing conditions that may prevent the client from engaging in this invasive procedure.  It is not uncommon for the client to fill out a contraindication disclosure and/or disclaimer as this procedure is a self-administered treatment (if an open system is used) and complications may ensue if the client is not completely honest about their current health condition.

The consultation is never scheduled the same day as the treatment since preparation is required in order for the treatment to be effective and uneventful.  If the client decides to move forward with the treatment, a colon hydrotherapy preparation guide is provided which includes dietary restrictions and proper preparation guidelines for the procedure.

Preparation for the treatment requires 24 hours of prep time.  Treatments are performed once a week over the course of three to six weeks and each treatment is 45 minutes in length.  The colon hydrotherapy practitioner will determine how many treatments are required based on the client's medical history and discussions regarding bowel function and gastrointestinal health.
